The final session of the Debate School (Thrusday 23, 18:15 at KY TuoMela) will focus on strategy in competitive debating. We’ll teach you not just to make beautiful arguments but how to make these arguments win in comparison to the other teams. We’ll also look at taking down other teams’ arguments through effective rebuttal. At the end of the session, we’ll be putting all the skills you’ve acquired in Debate School to practice in our first British Parliamentary debate! Attention Freshers and existing students alike!

Want to learn how to become a charismatic speaker and win the hearts of an audience? Wish you had the secret tools to make convincing arguments? Have you heard about this debating thing but are not really sure where to start or how to get involved? We got you!

The Aalto and Helsinki Debating Societies are running Debate School to teach you the ins and outs of debating on the 7th, 16th and 25th of September. Events will be hosted partly in-person and partly online. This event requires a sign-up, as places are limited.

This first session will focus on making a persuasive argument and standing up to speak. We will explore the world of reasoning and persuasion and learn how to be confident when standing up to speak. We will teach you useful concepts of speaking and practice skills together. The focus is on the core: being able to speak convincingly in any situation in front of any audience – skills that we believe benefit everyone in their studies and work life.

We look forward to seeing you there, and welcome!

For many of you, you are either returning to university or starting university in what are very exceptional circumstances. This fall will likely be a time of new experiences and challenges for all of us, but just as the university calendar starts anew, it is also time to consider new hobbies and activities to bring the spice of student life! With Aalto Debating Society, we are very excited to have you join us at Newcomer’s Evening, as well as our other debating events this fall!
WHAT IS DEBATE?
Many formats of debating exist, but the format utilized by Aalto Debating Society is British Parliamentary debate. In this style, four teams each consisting of two speakers, give 7-minute speeches according to their given side on a motion or a topic. Debates are adjudicated by a judge, who judges speeches in accordance with the level of persuasiveness and the arguments within speeches.
WHY DEBATE?
Debating is an engaging hobby that allows you to develop your speaking and persuasion skills, visit tournaments around the world (or online), as well as learning new perspectives and making new friends. It is an activity that allows you to develop your skills in a social environment, with post-debate socials being as important as the debates themselves.
WHO ARE WE?
We are Aalto Debating Society, a student society within KY and AYY dedicated to fostering the hobby of British Parliamentary debate among Aalto students. We organize debates every Thursday, where anyone is welcome to join us, regardless of their experience level!
WHERE CAN YOU FIND OUT MORE?
Newcomer’s Evening is the event to learn even more about debating, as well as meet the boards of Aalto Debating Society and Helsinki Debating Society. The event will be held online.

Even though we couldn’t meet in person this year, we still had a great 🌲🌳 Helsinki Online Open 🌲🌳. Thanks to our own members Ananth, Jialin, Nina and HDS’ Joona for their months long work in organising the competition.

We were also fortunate to have several of our own members speaking and judging this year. Congratulations to Mikko for placing as the 5th best novice speaker 🔥🔥🔥 and Markus and Uzair for breaking to the Quarter Finals💪💪💪. Special shout-out to all our members who debated and judged at HOO 2020 ❤️❤️❤️ Cross-posted from Aalto Debating Society https://ift.tt/2QbmT4m on July 13, 2020 at 03:02AM
